Lorey was born and raised in the Alle-Kiski Valley. Her parents,
John and Judy were musicians in the well renowned Johnny Murphy Orchestra. Her
father played Alto Sax and her mother was the featured solo female vocalist. Lorey's
childhood memories center on music and her parent's performances. She fondly
remembers traveling with her Dad on a Johnny Murphy Tour to the Melody Mill Ballroom
Dancing Arena in Chicago.
Her father continued on with the
Johnny Murphy Orchestra and to this day, 42 years later, still enjoys the thrill of
performing. Her Mother went on to various other singing ventures including solo
work. Her popularity exploded after joining her brother, Nick, to form one of
the area's most popular local acts, The Nick Mitchell Trio.
Lorey began studying piano at age 6,
under the instruction of the late Bill Morocco,
pianist for the Johnny Murphy Orchestra. She continued to study well into her senior
high school years, being influenced by such pianists as Elton John, Scott Joplin and her
Uncle Nick, a self taught musician who excels on the keyboards.
She played solely by book while her
brother, Jay tinkered with many
instruments and could play almost any song by ear. Little did she know that one day
all that would change for her due to his talent and influence.
Lorey became very involved in the
school choirs and plays, and was chosen for various district and regional choruses,
including the Jazz Rock Ensemble. She traveled to Europe with the American
Bicentennial Youth Band and Choir in 1976. This group was formed by select musicians
from all over the United States.
She went on to attend the University
of Pittsburgh from 1976 - 1980, obtaining a Bachelors degree in social work. During
this time she remain involved in university and church choirs and was chosen to study and
perform with the Heinz Chapel Choir. Once again she traveled, spending 12 weeks
touring throughout France.
After graduating, Lorey was away from
singing for a short time. She earned her
Masters degree in social work and realized that she missed something that she had come to
love. Music.
One eventful day, while hanging out
with Jay and the rest of his band, he suggested she, "just play along with us on the
keyboards and help fill in."
She says, "I will never forget
the song, Robert Plant's, I'm in the Mood. The band clicked musically
and especially vocally with the harmonies. The next sixteen years have formed some
of my most cherished memories playing, performing and writing with my brother, Jay and my
best friends, Mrasz and Weber."
Lorey is the proud Mother of two
daughters, Zena and Mia and hopes to pass her musical legacy on to them. So far,
Zena has shown an amazing talent for the flute and she hopes Mia will soon follow.
"Even as our lives have
changed over the years, one thing hasn't and I don't think ever will. We have played
it all, done it all, grown together as musicians and hope we never grow too old to perform."

In loving memory of Bill Morocco, and
loving thanks to my family. God Bless!
